FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Sophomore Jake Laville lit the lamp twice in the third period to force overtime, but the Rivier men's ice hockey team ultimately fell in a shootout at Framingham St. on Saturday evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play at Loring Arena.
The Raiders fell to 6-15-2 (2-12-2 MASCAC) as the host Rams improved to 2-17-3 (1-12-2 MASCAC).
The Rams scored the first two goals of the game before graduate student Cody Rumsey lit the lamp with less than 30 seconds to play in the opening frame to cut Rivier's deficit down to one goal.
Framingham St. got back out to a two-goal lead 13:31 into the second, converting on a powerplay chance. Just 1:15 later, the Raiders struck back again as junior Carter Poulin found the back of the net on a feed from senior Ryan Nolte to make it 3-2.
Laville started a scoring stretch in the third that included three goals over 1:43 of action. The Raiders tied things up as senior Cormac Hayes assisted Laville's first goal at 15:13 of the third. The Rams responded in 14 seconds to once again take the lead back. After 1:29 of additional action, Laville tallied an unassisted goal to tie the contest at 4-4.
Neither side scored in the five-minute overtime period, sending the game into a shootout.
Rivier was kept scoreless in the shootout while the hosts scored on their second try to earn the extra point.
Sophomore goalie Mason Meyer made 46 stops in the setback as the Rams outshot the Raiders 50-39.
Rivier returns home for its regular-season home finale on Thursday, Feb. 20 in a 7:50 p.m. MASCAC matchup against UMass Dartmouth from Conway Arena.
