DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Rivier men's ice hockey team was defeated by UMass Dartmouth, 5-2, in a Saturday evening Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) contest at Hetland Arena.
The Raiders fell to 5-9-1 (1-6-1 MASCAC) while the Corsairs improved to 7-5-0 (4-2-0 MASCAC).
With under a minute left to play in the opening period, the hosts got on the board with a goal off the stick of Michael Mania to give UMass Dartmouth a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
Rivier junior defenseman Carter Poulin answered 2:27 into the second period on an unassisted tally while on the penalty kill. The Corsairs took the lead back less than two minutes later as Kevin Johnston lit the lamp to make it a 2-1 game. With 2:34 left in the frame, sophomore forward Jake Laville leveled the score at 2-2 on an unassisted goal of his own, also a man-down.
After 10:16 of action in the third, UMass Dartmouth scored its first of three in the third period as Alex Walker put the Corsairs up 3-2. Over the next 5:41, the hosts would tack on two more to make it a 5-2 game and put the Raiders out of reach.
Rivier outshot UMD 31-26 with senior netminder LJ Newell making 21 stops in the loss.
The Raiders return home to Conway Arena on Thursday, Jan. 23 on the opening night of Family Weekend for a MASCAC showdown with Fitchburg St. Puck drop is slated for 7:50 p.m.
