
Baseball Falls to Elmira, 8-2
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Rivier baseball team fell to Elmira, 8-2, in a non-conference matchup on Monday evening at Ebbets Field at The Ripken Experience.
The Raiders fell to 2-1 while the Soaring Eagles improved to 2-2.
Elmira got out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the third using two hits and capitalizing on two Rivier errors. The Soaring Eagles added a sixth run in the top of the fourth, scoring on a passed ball.
The Raiders got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as junior Nathan Innerfield came home on a passed ball.
Elmira added a pair in the top of the seventh with Rivier responding with one run in the bottom half of the frame.
Sophomore lefthanded reliever Brian West threw two scoreless innings, retiring six out of seven batters faced with one strikeout in that span. The Raiders were unable to produce a late rally and took their first loss of the season.
Erik Whitehead, a senior lefty, went 2.2 scoreless innings giving up no hits and one walk and fanned two Soaring Eagle batters in his first appearance of the season.
Senior Ben O'Connell went 1-for-1 at the dish with one walk as first-year Jayce Martinez went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Rivier returns to action on Tuesday, March 4 for an 11:00 a.m. contest against Valley Forge from Griffith Field at The Ripken Experience.
