Pilgrims trip up Raiders in Non-Conference action

Henniker, N.H. - New England College baseball grabbed a 6-3 victory in a non-conference game against Rivier College. With the win the Pilgrims move to 16-10 overall, while the loss drops the Raiders to 2-24.

Leading off for the Pilgrims was Gilberto Luis-Hermina (Miami, Fla.) who singled and stole second and reached third on an error by the catcher. Gilberto was brought home by a sacrifice fly from Christopher Smith (Raynham, Mass.) putting the Pilgrims on the board first.

The Raiders would answer in the third as sophomore JJ Montello (Nashua, N.H.) singled to open the inning, then stole second. Montello would later score thanks to a single by junior Kyle Bowser (Newington, N.H.).

In fourth the Raiders would grab their first lead of the game as junior John DiBenedetto (Tampa, Fla.) scored from second by an error on the pitcher.

The Pilgrims would come right back and answer with two runs in the home half of the fourth. NEC's Pierce Byrd (Ft. Myers, Fla.) singled and stole second and moved to third on a sacrafice fly from Kevin Caputo (Dighton, Mass.) eventually scoring on a Lucas Burgess (Bath, N.H.) double. Burgess would later be driven home by a Juan Berrios (Ft. Myers, Fla) single.

The Raiders would tie the game back up in the top of the fifth as freshman Garris Davis (Brockton, Mass) would reach on an error by the catcher and would advance to second on the play. Sophomore Arthur Hoffman (Malden, MA) would single to advancing Davis to third. Davis would later score on a sacrifice fly from Bowser.

The Pilgrims then answered with two runs as Chris Biskup (South Portland, Maine) and Christopher Smith would both score on a Pierce Byrd single.

Getting the win on the mound for the Pilgrims was first-year Andrew Guercio (Bethel Conn.) who pitched the complete game allowing just two earned runs on five hits and striking out six.

Senior Kevin Romero (Waterbury, CT) received the loss for the Raiders as he made his first start of the season. Romero pitched 4+ innings allowing NEC to score 4 runs.

Rivier will host Norwich University in their next contest. The GNAC double-header will be on Saturday afternoon at 1pm inside of Historic Holman Stadium.
