Riv Baseball splits double-header with Daniel Webster

(Nashua, NH) Junior Justin Chenevert (Wilmington, MA) pitched 5.2 innings holding the Eagles to just 3 runs as the Rivier College Raiders took game one of the annual double-header at Holman Stadium this evening.

Chenevert (1-4) was masterful on the mound as he limited Daniel Webster to just 3 hits while striking out two. Senior Kevin Weaver (Hudson, NH) came in and retired four of the final five batters of the game for DWC to earn his second save of 2012.

Daniel Webster would score two runs in the fourth inning without recording a hit. Darrik Marstaller reached on an error to begin the frame and Elliot Kilgore walked to set up first and second, no out. After a groundout that advanced the runners, Korey LeLievre hit a SAC fly to center that scored Marstaller and moved Kilgore to third. Kilgore would score on a wild pitch.

Rivier scored all four runs in the fifth inning as both junior Kyle Bowser (Newington, NH) and freshman Michael Scanlon (Plantsville, CT) singled to begin the frame. Weaver then lifted a 1-2 offering from DWC starting pitcher Zack Hurley to center for a SAC fly. With runners on first and second, junior Aramis Velez (Lowell, MA) singled through the left side that plated junior pinch runner Matthew St. Peter (Colchester, VT) to tie the game at two. The Raiders would score their next two runs thanks to a throwing error and a RBI single by freshman Bryar King (Berlin, NH).

DWC would plate their third run in the sixth when LeLievre crossed the plate on another error by the second baseman.

Scanlon finished the game going 2-for-4 while junior catcher John DiBenedetto (Tampa, FL) was 1-for-2 and threw out two runners trying to steal second base. Sophomore JJ Montello (Nashua, NH) also recorded two hits as he went 2-for-3 with a double.

With the win, Rivier snaps a 19 game losing streak and improves to 2-22 on the season. Daniel Webster drops to 13-11.

In the nightcap, LeLievre connected for a pair of two-run homers while Marstaller was 4 for 5 with two RBI as the Eagles jumped ahead early with four runs in the first and second innings.

LeLievre belted his second of the season as part of the four-run second and added this third with two out as part of another four-run sixth, which also included a Marstaller two-run single.

Ryan DuPont added a pair of hits including a two-run double in the first and a RBI single in the third. Rich Lizotte connected for a two-run single in the first and another RBI single in the second.

Tyler Bonin chipped in with a pair of hits including a RBI double in the third. Leadoff man  Kilgore scored four runs without an at bat after being hit a remarkable four times (a new single-game program record) and drawing a walk.

David Wesson (2-0) picked up the win on the mound, allowing all three earned runs on four hits, striking out two and walking two.

DWC led 11-0 before Rivier plated three in the top of the fifth keyed by RBI singles from Bowser (two hits) and Velez while DiBenedetto pushed one across with a fielder's choice.

Scanlon started for the Raiders and took the loss on mound to fall to 0-1.

The Eagles return to action on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Newbury in a pair of pivotal NECC matchups beginning at Noon. Rivier will travel to New England College for a non-conference matchup on Thursday afternoon.
