
Poitras reaches 1,000 career points; Raiders drop one at JWU
(Providence, R.I.) Junior forward Tom Poitras recorded his 1,000th career point as the Rivier University Men's Basketball team fell to Johnson and Wales University this evening, 61-47, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action.
The Bow, New Hampshire native paced Rivier with 26 points and four rebounds. The illustrious 1,000th point came with 3:12 left on the clock in the first half when Poitras laid one in off the backboard. Junior Nick Walch (Dedham, MA) notched six points and four boards in the setback for the Raiders.
Senior Dan Barbour (Bridgeport, Conn.) paced Johnson & Wales with 16 points and three assists while freshman Tom Garrick, Jr. (Seekonk, Mass.) and fellow rookie Quarry Greenway (Westchester, N.Y.) each chipped in with 12 points for the Wildcats. Junior Esaie Touze (Providence, R.I.) narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Johnson & Wales opened the game on a 13-4 run, capped by a jumper by junior Curtis Lucas (Providence, R.I.) with 14:04 left in the first half. The Wildcats took their first double digit lead on a jumper by junior Frank Robinson (Providence, R.I.), making the score 20-9 with 8:52 left in the first half. JWU headed into the locker room at halftime with the 30-19 lead.
The Wildcats extended their lead to a game-high 22 points when a three pointer basket by Garrick made the score 46-24 with 15:44 left in the contest. JWU then cruised to the 61-47 victory.
With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 11-11 on the season and 10-5 in the GNAC while Rivier falls to 10-12 for the year and 6-9 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, February 9th when they travel to Norwich for a GNAC contest at 1:00 p.m.
