Softball drops two against Wesley and Pitt-Greensburg down in South Carolina

(Myrtle Beach, South Carolina) The Rivier University Softball team banged out eleven hits in game one but was unable to pull out a win as they lost to Wesley 14-6 in a run ruled shorten six innings. The Raiders went on to drop the second game of the day to Pitts-Greensburg by a 9-5 margin.

Game One: Wesley 14, Rivier University 6 (Final/6 innings)

The Raiders scored four runs in the fifth inning to pull within a run but Wesley was too much as they plated seven runs over the next two innings to win 14-6.

Senior Nicole Peacock (Warwick, RI) and sophomore Kathryn Mostone (Pelham, NH) each had two hits and two RBI in the loss while freshman Nicole Scotti (Concord, NH) and Jessica Cote (Nashua, NH) also contributed a pair of hits. Cote and sophomore Allyson Nolan (Willington, Conn.) recorded a RBI each in the game.

Sophomore Taylor Miller (Haverhill, Mass.) suffered the loss as she tossed 5.2 innings allowing 14 runs (9 earned) on 17 hits and recording two strike outs.

Game Two: Pittsburgh-Greensburg 9, Rivier University 5 (Final)

Sophomore Libby Sammon (Rockland, Mass.) allowed nine runs – eight earned – over her six innings of work as the Raiders fell 9-5 to Pittsburgh-Greensburg in the final game of the split doubleheader.

The Raider offensive scored five runs and had six hits on the afternoon as Scotti led the way with a 2-for-4 game. Freshman Shaylyn Freitas (Pelham, NH) added two RBI with a 1-for-3 effort at the dish and both Nolan and Peacock added RBI hits. Freshman Jenna Garrison (Glastonbury, Conn.) went 1-for-4 with a run scored in the loss.

The Softball team will wrap up their 2014 spring trip with a pair of games on Thursday against Eureka and Penn State-Altoona.
