Softball Drops Two on Final Day of The Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. The Rivier softball team concluded its Spring Break trip with an 8-3 loss versus Edgewood and an 8-0 loss to Hope on Saturday afternoon at Legends Way Ballfields.

The Raiders ended their trip to The Sunshine State going .500, posting their first 5-5 start since 2017.

Riv softball will be back in action on Saturday, March 16 when it travels to Mass. Maritime for a non-conference doubleheader with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. from Alison Rollins Field.

Edgewood 8, Rivier 3

It wasn't until the fourth inning when Rivier broke open the score with a single from Christina Panagiotopoulos which sent Sophia Quinlin home, giving Rivier a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles answered back in the fifth inning with back-to-back doubles to left field totaling four runs, stealing the lead, 4-1.

Kyleigh Burtsell was subbed into the game in the fifth to pinch-hit and launched a single to center field, sending Sarah Frazier home to grab another run for Riv. A wild pitch in the same inning scored Amanda Atkinson to make it a one-run game.

In the sixth inning, the Eagles earned a run from a dropped strikeout which extended their lead back to two, 5-3.

Edgewood tallied three unearned runs in the seventh to increase its lead, pulling away for its fifth win of the season.

Panagiotopoulos went 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in one run.

Courtney Marioles got the start for Riv, striking out one. Hailey Berube entered the game in the fourth and struck out two batters.

Edgewood edged Rivier in hits, 11-10.

Hope 8, Rivier 0 (5 innings)

Rivier was downed in five innings by way of the mercy rule.

Hope put together eight hits and six stolen bases over five innings of shutout ball. Sophie Stironek batted in a team-best three runs while Samantha Vermeesch completed the contest with nine strikeouts from the circle.
