Softball Takes One from Wentworth, Falls to Concordia Chicago

LEESBERG, Fla.  The Rivier softball team split on day four at The Spring Games on Friday afternoon, grabbing a 4-3 win over regional opponent Wentworth before falling to Concordia Chicago, 7-5.

The Raiders are now 5-3 with another set of games left to go in Florida tomorrow versus Edgewood at 1:30 p.m. and Hope at 4:30 p.m. at Legends Way Ballfields in Clermont, Fla.

Rivier 4, Wentworth 3

The Leopards opened up the game with a run early in the first.

Riv stole Wentworth's early lead in the second inning generated by Courtney Marioles reaching first on a fielding error and a sacrifice fly to center from Avry Nelson, to put the Raiders up 2-1.

Up next, Hayley Rapaglia launched a single to right center in the third, sending Sophia Quinlan home to make it 3-1 in favor of the Raiders.

The Leopards grinded out another run in the fourth produced by a ground out to Sarah Frazier at short, giving the runner enough time to cross the plate, cutting their deficit back to one.

Rivier's Rapaglia was back at it in the top of the third with a triple to right, scoring Fraizer to make it 4-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Wentworth gave one last push with a single to left field, adding one run which wouldn't be enough to force extra innings.

Rapaglia went 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBIs.

Hailey Berube got the start for Riv, throwing four innings, earning two strikeouts, and picking up the win. Marioles entered in the bottom of the fifth for relief, keeping the lead in the Raiders' hands.

Concordia Chicago 7, Rivier 5

Concordia Chicago went up 4-0 in the first couple of innings, but Riv quickly responded with three runs in the second and one in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4.

With Amanda Atkinson reaching first on a fielding error, Fraizer scored the first run of the game for Rivier in the second inning. Ally Gerardi scored the second run for Riv on a ground out from Nelson before Hayleigh Silva contributed with a single up the middle, pushing Atkinson home to make it 4-3.

In the fourth, Olivia Couto hit a dribbler to short, giving herself enough time to make it to first and allow Atkinson to cross the plate for the second time, tying the game.

The Cougars went up again in the fifth, 5-4, with a big triple to right center off the bat of McKyler Morris.

Couto retied the game in the bottom of the sixth, rocketing a double to right center which scored Atkinson for the third time.

Concordia Chicago recorded back-to-back RBI base knocks in the top of the seventh to retake the lead and secure the 7-5 victory.

Couto ended the game going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Berube made another appearance in the middle of the contest for Riv pitching five innings, striking out three.
