Baseball earns first ever DH sweep of Suffolk; Mears spins a 3 hit gem

(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Baseball team completed the Great Northeast Athletic Conference double-header sweep of Suffolk University this evening by a 7-0 final at Historic Holman Stadium. Tonight's game was the continuation of last Friday night's scheduled double-header that was fogged out at Franklin Pierce University. The Raiders even up their conference record at 6-6 and reach the double digit win mark (10-16) for the first time since 2008. Suffolk falls to 10-14 overall and 6-4 in the GNAC.

Senior Alex Mears (Sandown, N.H.) was the story of the game as the right-hander scattered three hits over seven innings of work for his fourth win of the season. He also retired five hitters on strikes and did not issue a free base in the contest. This is Mears' second win over Suffolk this season as he was credited with the win last Friday night in relief.

Offensively, the Raiders received solid efforts from seniors Mike Scanlon (Plantsville, Conn.) and David Cusack (Newburyport, Mass.). Scanlon had a huge two RBI double in the third inning on his 1-for-3 night while Cusack laced a two out, two RBI triple to right in the fourth. Cusack went 2-for-3 on the evening and junior Taylor Black (West Springfield, Mass.) finished 2-for-4 with a RBI double in the first inning. Freshman Ty Seaton (Providence, R.I.) also collected an RBI with his double in the fifth inning.

Suffolk's starter Chuck Gibson suffered the loss as he falls to 1-4 on the year. The sophomore right-hander allowed seven runs (three earned) on eight hits in 4.2 innings. Left-handed reliever Mike Masulli closed the game allowing just a harmless single in his 1.1 innings of work.

Rivier will remain in the friendly confines of Historic Holman Stadium for the next two nights as they host Plymouth State (4/16) and the University of Maine-Presque Isle (4/17). Suffolk will play Eastern Connecticut State tomorrow afternoon at 3:30pm down in Connecticut.
