Raiders hang on for a 10-7 victory over Newbury College

(Nashua, NH) In a game where both team's offenses would explode for several runs the Rivier University Softball Team came out victorious over the Newbury College Nighthawks by a score of 10-7. With the non-conference triumph the Raiders' overall record improves to 11-13 on the season. The loss drops Newbury's overall record to 10-11. The game took place under the lights on Raider Diamond in front of a crowd of 60.

Leading the Raiders to victory were junior starter Hillary Tarr (North Easton, MA) and sophomore third baseman Kirstie Clark (Brentwood, NH). Tarr struck out four in 5.1 innings of work and aided her cause by scoring and driving in a run. Clark was an absolute force at the plate as she was 2-for-3 with a pair of extra base hits, 4 RBIs and scored a run on a passed ball after a triple in the fifth. The additional Rivier runs were driven in by a trio of freshman; Danielle Worthington (Uxbridge, MA), Sahara Brown (Barnstead, NH), and Lia Bobek (Hollis, NH). Nine Raiders collected hits and ten of their base runners came across the plate in the contest. Although she started the game in right field, freshman Taylor Miller (Haverhill, MA) came in for Tarr to shut the light on the Nighthawks and secure the victory.

While the Newbury offense outhit the Raiders, the multitude of runners left on base left them short on runs for the victory. Alyssa Donovan was 4-for-5 at the plate for the Nighthawks with an RBI, run scored, and stolen base. Julia Flamenco contributed with two hits in the game including a double that drove in a run in the fifth inning. Micheala McGowan was on the rubber to start for the Blue Jays but received the loss after five innings of work.

The Raiders return to the diamond on April 11 when they will travel to West Hartford, Connecticut to face conference opponent University of Saint Joseph in an afternoon twinbill. Newbury returns to action on April 11 when they will face Wheelock College in a double-header.
