Miller tosses complete game shutout in win over Fisher College

(Nashua, NH) The Rivier University Softball earned an 8-0 non-conference victory this evening in the 2013 Home Opener against Fisher College. The win propels the Raiders to 5-8 on the season while the Falcons fall to 0-14.

Rivier scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Junior Nicole Peacock (Warwick, RI) singled, stole both second and third before crossing the plate on a RBI groundout by senior Marissa Mercier (North Smithfield, RI). Freshman Danielle Worthington (Uxbridge, MA) would knock home the second run of the inning as her RBI groundout allowed classmate Kathryn Mostone (Pelham, NH) to touch the plate.

Mercier would record her second RBI in as many innings as she bounced into a fielder's choice that allowed freshman Allyson Nolan (Willington, CT), who singled to begin the frame, to score the third Raider run.

Nolan's two-out, two RBI single pushed the Rivier lead to 5-0 in the third as the Raiders secured the win.

The Raiders' 8th and game ending run occurred in the bottom of the fifth when a throwing error by the Falcons allowed freshman Elizabeth Reid (Vineyard Haven, MA) to score.

Nolan was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate in the win as she finished with 2 RBI and a run scored. Mercier finished the game going 1-for-3 (a RBI double in the fourth) with 3 RBI. Peacock went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three stolen bases.

Freshman Taylor Miller (Haverhill, MA) earned her first collegiate victory as she tossed five shutout innings allowing just four hits and striking out three.

Rivier freshman Jayla Vega (Hoboken, NJ) suffered the loss as she pitched 4.1 innings giving up eight runs (seven earned) on eleven hits and striking out three.

The Falcons receive four hits from four different student-athletes. Junior Michelle Fabiano (Nashua, NH) was 1-for-2 while freshman Cassy Pillard (Jefferson, NH) had a perfect 1-for-1 night at the plate. Vega and freshman Rebecca Streeter (Franklin, NH) recorded the other two hit for Fisher.

The Raiders are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host Suffolk University in a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference contests beginning at 1pm. Fisher will travel to Maine Maritime Academy on Tuesday afternoon for their next two games.
