Riv Softball sweeps twinbill against Saint Joseph

(Nashua, NH) The Rivier College Raiders (24-10, GNAC 16-8) came away with two hard fought victories Wednesday night as they defeated the Saint Joseph College Blue Jays (17-19, 12-12 GNAC) in double header GNAC action.

The first game finished with a final score of 2-1 with all of the runs coming in the 3rd inning. Those runs came for the Raiders by the top of their line-up as the pair of sophomores Nicole Peacock (Warwick, RI) and Catherine Roy (Dracut, MA) each had an RBI in the game. Leading the Raiders on the hill once again was junior Nadjeska Reynolds (Hamden, CT) who tossed a complete game only allowing 1 earned run and striking out 4.

For the Blue Jays they turned out a strong performance in the 1st game both offensively and on the mound which ended up resulting in only 1 run on the board. That one run came from junior Emily Hummel (Hebron, CT) who finished 2 for 4 with an RBI double in the game. Senior Kristina Torres (Groton, CT) pitched a strong game but unfortunately took the loss dealing 6 innings only giving up 3 hits and 2 runs while striking out 7.

The second game resulted in a shut out for the Raiders behind the strong pitching of sophomore Hillary Tarr (North Easton, MA) who tossed a complete game only allowing 7 base runners while striking out 4. Offensively the Raiders tacked on their runs from a Peacock RBI triple, a Kelsey Goodridge (Chelmsford, MA) RBI double, and a mammoth home run from junior Marissa Mercier (North Springfield, RI).

The brightest spot for the Blue Jays in the second game came on the mound from their starter Hummel who tossed 6 innings allowing 2 earned runs and 11 strike outs and taking a hard luck loss.

Rivier will return to action as they wrap up the 2012 regualr season with a 1pm GNAC Doubleheader against Simmons College. Saint Joseph will travel to Saint Joseph's College in Maine for their GNAC twinbill on Saturday as well.
