Men's Volleyball takes two from JWU and Albertus Magnus

(Providence, R.I.) The Rivier University Men's Volleyball team made a huge stride forward this afternoon as they swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match against Albertus Magnus College and the hosts, Johnson and Wales University. The pair of wins sends the Raiders' GNAC record to 7-3 (17-9 overall) and in the hunt for the overall #1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament with four GNAC games remaining.

Game One: Rivier University 3, Johnson & Wales University 1 (Final)

The Raiders took the opening game of the day's tri-match with a 3-1 win over JWU by scores of 25-16, 25-19, 18-25 and 25-22.

Junior Ian Wolski (Westfield, Mass.) led the team with 15 kills and both senior Mike Hadder (Yucapia, Calif.) and sophomore Grant Andler (Chicago, Ill.) added 14 kills each for the win. Hadder also finished with a .440 hitting percentage with four total blocks. Junior Tyler Blank (Rochester, N.Y.) dished out 52 assists and sophomore Garrett Bucklin (Jamestown, R.I.) led the defensive attack with 13 digs. Also registering double-digit digs were seniors Mike Hovnanian (Methuen, Mass.) and Nick Ochoa (Whittier, Calif.) who had 12 and 11, respectively.

The Wildcats were led by Brendan Baker who had 10 kills and Cameron Ponce recorded 30 assists.

Game Two: Rivier University 3, Albertus Magnus College 0 (Final)

Rivier extended their winning streak to 6 games as they easily dispatched Albertus Magnus in straight sets with scores of 25-12, 25-8 and 25-15.

Freshman Khaynen Yocca (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had 9 kills and a .727 hitting percentage with classmate Dashaun Graham (Highland Falls, N.Y.) adding eight kills and a .889 hitting percentage in the final game of the day for the Raiders. Junior Matthew LaSance (Madison, Conn.) was the primary setter and passed out 36 assists as the team recorded a .550 hitting percentage.

Albertus Magnus (5-11, 0-9 GNAC) saw Justin Tharau knock down eight kills and Ben Spike added six kills on the afternoon.

Next up for Rivier will be another GNAC contest at Emmaunel College on Tuesday evening. The Raiders will be back at the Muldoon on Thursday night as they honor their seniors prior to the start of the 7pm game vs. Emerson College.
