(Nashua, NH) In a thrilling GNAC Men's Soccer matchup in front of a large crowd for Friends and Family weekend, the Rivier University Raiders almost beat Saint Joseph's College (ME) as they fell in double overtime this afternoon up on the hill.
The Monks (8-6-2, 5-3-1 GNAC ) jumped out to a quick lead as Alex Day was able to thread one pass Raiders senior goaltender Matthew St. Peter (Colchester, VT) just 4 minutes into the game.
Rivier (0-11-1, 0-7-1 GNAC) would get the equalizer about 10 minutes later as freshman Eddie Soucie (South Ryegate, VT) was in the right place at the right time as a rebound fell his way and he knocked it home for his first collegiate goal.
From that point on, it was a battle of the goaltenders as St. Peter and the combination of Scott Benner and Kenny Grade held the opposing teams scoreless until the second overtime.
With just over 2 minutes to play, Saint Joseph's Zack Johnson was able to find himself alone inside the 18 and sneak a shot passed the outstretched St. Peter to give the Monks the victory.
St. Peter made 13 saves on his senior day allowing just the two goals. Grade earned the win in net as he played 72 minutes in net, recording 3 saves.
The Raiders will return to action on Wednesday afternoon as they travel down to Providence, RI and take on Johnson and Wales University in a 6pm GNAC game.
