Cohoon, Thorpe extend Women's Soccer win streak to three games

(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Women's Soccer team extended their season opening win streak to three games this evening as they blanked visiting Newbury College, 2-0 in the first game of the Rivier University Raider Classic.

Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Goodspeed (Merrimack, N.H.) stopped all 4 shots she faced for her second consecutive shutout and sophomore Maggie Cohoon (Derry, N.H.) scored her fifth goal of the season for the eventual game winner. Freshman Jennifer Thorpe (North Attleboro, Mass.) recorded her first collegiate goal in the second half.

Rivier would get the only goal they needed in the 19th minute as Cohoon received a pass from Thorpe at the top of the 18 and promptly found the back of the net. In the 77th minute, Thorpe would be the beneficiary as she was given the ball on the six from junior Paxton LaRocque (Londonderry, N.H.). LaRocque was able to deflect a corner kick from freshman Emily Edwards (North Kingstown, R.I.) and place it in front of Thorpe who chipped it home for the insurance tally.

Junior Elizabeth Fox (Orono, Maine) made 15 saves on the evening and freshman Shannon Walsh (Massapequa, N.J.) registered four shots on net to led the Nighthawks.

The defensive effort from Rivier, lead by Edwards and freshman Lydia Brown (Brookline, N.H.), limited Newbury to just 9 shots in the contest. The Raiders outshot the Nighthawks 25-9.

The Raiders will close out the Rivier University Raider Classic on Sunday afternoon as they host Lyndon State College in a 12pm kickoff. Newbury will square off against Lyndon State tomorrow in game two of the Classic, beginning at 1pm.
