Men's Soccer: Raiders blanked by Saint Joseph's College

(Standish, Maine) The Rivier University Men's Soccer team lost a tough road matchup this afternoon as they fell to Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 7-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at the SJC Athletics Complex. The loss sends the Raiders to 2-9-1 overall and an 0-5-1 mark in league play while the Monks remain undefeated at 10-0-1, 6-0-1 GNAC.

Junior forward Jesse Ramirez (Dumont, N.J.) put the Monks on the board in the 15th minute, when he tapped a well-placed Jackson Taylor (Gorham, Maine) throw-in into an empty net. Seventeen minutes later, Mattos potted his first of the afternoon off a Cody Elliott (Gorham, Maine) pass, lifting his team to a 2-0 lead, a score that remained heading into intermission.

Eight minutes into the second stanza, Mattos netted his conference-leading 14th goal of the year, on a rebound off a JoJo Strobino(Clifton, N.J.) shot, and sophomore Keenan Welzel (Brunswick, Maine) scored his second goal of the year 30 seconds later to give the Monks a 4-0 advantage.

Elliott and senior Trevor Lopes (Cumberland, R.I.) managed to score 27 seconds apart, with the latter launching the hosts to a 6-0 cushion. Sophomore Mitchell Duncan (Sanford, Maine) capped the game scoring in the 74th minute off a Colin Grant (Harvard, Mass.) feed.

Rivier sophomore keeper Collin Deyarmin (Raymond, N.H.) made 10 saves on 17 chances on the afternoon while SJC's Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) and David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) combined for the clean sheet.

Rivier will return home on Wednesday night in their next contest as they host Suffolk University for a 7pm GNAC tilt at Raider Field. The Monks will look to continue their hot streak as they get set to travel to Emmanuel College on Wednesday night.
