ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Rivier University Raiders men's lacrosse team faced Rosemont College on this blustery afternoon in a non-conference game. The Ravens played the Raiders tough today, but were out-scored 7-1 in the third frame and eventually lost the game by a final score of 14-9 to drop their overall record to 0-2. Rivier won their second straight to move to 2-1 on the young season. The Raiders were paced by David Bray (Fr, West Suffield, CT) who piled up 12 ground balls, 2 goals on a game high 14 shots and 2 assists. With 7 ground balls each, Danny Hooper (Jr, Wakefield, RI), who also contributed a goal, and Rob Auer (Fr, Salem, NH), who also popped in 1 goal, 2 assists, and 9 shots, were also key contributors. Brandon Hanifin (Fr, Tewksbury, MA) 4 goals, 2 assists, and 4 ground balls, Mike Arricale (So, Billerica, MA) 4 goals, and Kyle Graham (Fr, Londonderry, NH) 2 goals and 5 ground balls were other key contributors. And, backboning the road win, was Clark Plummer (Fr, Londonderry, NH) in goal who had 8 saves for the Raiders.
Rosemont took the lead on a goal from freshman Stephen Licata (Towson, MD/Baltimore Lutheran) with just over two minutes played. Licata sandwiched a Rivier goal with 9:05 left in the first to put the Ravens ahead 2-1. The Raiders scored an extra-man goal by Arricale with an assist from Hanifin to tie the score and added another from Graham with an unassisted strike to take a 3-2 lead with 5:16 remaining in the first. Freshman Ralph Ibezim (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia) tied the score again before Rivier scored a goal by Arricale with an assist from Kevin Dembkoski (Fr, Salem, NH) with 1:48 remaining to take a 4-3 lead at the end of the quarter.
After falling behind 5-3, the Ravens strung together three straight goals; one from junior Will Lawlor (St. Davids, PA/Radnor) and two from sophomore Justin Regan (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) to grab back a 6-5 lead with 1:25 left. The Raiders found the net with 0:24 left in the half on a unassisted goal from Hanifin to tie the game 6-6 at the major break.
Licata scored again to put the Ravens up 7-6 early in the 3rd quarter, but from that point Rivier scored six straight goals for the rest of the quarter to take a commanding 13-7 lead going into the final quarter. In the 3rd quarter the Ravens had to withstand a three-minute unreleasable penalty for playing with an illegal crosse, during which Rivier cashed in once.
Goals by Licata and Ibezim enabled the Ravens to outscore the Raiders 2-1 in the final quarter, but the six-goal differential coming into the final term was too big a hill for Rosemont to climb.
Licata led the Ravens, scoring four goals. Ibezim and Regan each had two goals and Lawlor had one goal.
The Raven's nine goals tied the program record for goals scored in a game (9 vs. Immaculata on 4/10/2012) and the 14 goals were the fewest ceded by the Ravens in the program's short history (15 goals scored by DeSales on 3/27/2012).
