Daniel Webster Takes Both in Cross Town Double Header

Nashua, NH – Daniel Webster College took both games of a home/away double header against cross town foe Rivier College today at historic Holman Stadium. The Eagles downed the Raiders 10-1 in the first game, then turned around and sent the Raiders packing with a 14-3 victory in the nightcap.

Daniel Webster was the home team in game 1 and jumped on the Raiders early. Rivier starting pitcher Kevin Romero (Waterbury, CT) hit two straight batter and a pass ball put the two on second and third for left fielder Korey LeLievre (Hudson, NH). The cleanup hitter did just that as he belted a triple into right field that scored both runs and put the Eagles up 2-0. After a walk to Tyler Bonin (Litchfield, NH) Rick Lizotte (West Warwick, RI) hit a pop fly into foul ground on the first base side, but Bonin was attempting to steal and was doubled off by Aramis Velez (Lowell, MA) to end the inning with just minor damage.

Daniel Webster struck again in the second with 2 outs and one runner on getting three straight hits including another triple, this time by Bruce Brown (Lowell, MA), to score three more runs to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead. Meanwhile, Daniel Webster starting pitcher Aaron Agrelo (New Bedford, MA) allowed just two base runner through the first four innings. A walk to Kyle Bowser (Newington, NH) to lead off the second inning was quickly erased when Agrelo picked him off and a base hit in the fourth by Nathan Knezevic (New Boston, NH) meant nothing as he was stranded on the base path.

The Raiders finally broke through in the fifth inning when a leadoff single and a stolen base by Kevin Weaver (Hudson, NH) put him in scoring position. A single by JJ Montello (Nashua, NH) followed by a hard hit ball to second by Mike Fecteau (Exeter, NH) drove the run across to get the Raiders on the board, but that's all they would get as Agrelo pitched through the sixth inning allowing just two more hits.

The Eagles added three more runs in the fifth inning, including a monster home run by LeLievre over the right-center field wall that scored two runs. DWC would add two more runs in the sixth to finish the game 10-1. Agrelo pitched 6 great innings for the win, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts. James Harvey (Nashua, NH) came in to pitch the seventh inning with a comfortable lead and put the Raiders down in order.

Romero took the loss going all 6 innings and allowing 9 earned runs. The junior only gave up 1 walk, but hit 5 batters and the Eagles got to him for 10 hits.

The second game started out much worse for Rivier as starting pitcher Knezevic was touched for 5 runs in the top of the first inning. A triple by leadoff batter Josh Chasse (Haverhill, MA) was followed by a walk and another triple by Brown. A walk to clean-up hitter LeLievre allowed the fourth straight batter to reach base before the Raiders were finally able to get the first out. Another walk to Lizotte and a single to Tyler Calkin (Hollis, NH) drove in the fourth and fifth runs and the Eagles sent all nine batters to the plate before Rivier could get out of the inning.

Rivier got a run back in the bottom half of the frame. A leadoff walk to Greg Sierra (Bronx, NY) started things off and Sierra immediately stole second to get into scoring position. A wild pitch by starting pitcher David Wesson (Pelham, NH) send Sierra to third where a sacrifice fly by Romero drove in the run.

After a scoreless second inning the Eagles again touched Knezevic for 5 runs and again sent all 9 batters to the plate. Knezevic didn't make it out of the inning and was replaced by Mike Fecteau, but the damage had once again been done. The Eagles scored 4 more times over the next two innings off Fecteau before Ford Coates (Raymond, NH) took his turn on the mound and shut down the Daniel Webster offense over the final two innings.

Wesson picked up the win pitching 4 innings while giving up just 1 hit with 4 strikeouts. Syed Ali (Dracut, MA), Josh Sigman (Litchfield, NH) and Skyler Gregorek (Schuylerville, NY) each pitched 1 inning of relief, combining for 3 strikeouts and just 1 hit allowed with no walks.

Knezevic gave up 10 runs on 6 hits, 6 walks and 2 hit batters in just 2.2 innings. Fecteau pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing 4 runs on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts. Coates pitched the final 2 innings with 4 strikeouts and just 1 hit allowed.

Chasse and LeLievre led the way for Daniel Webster as the two both went 4 for 7 over the two games and scored a combined 7 runs. LeLievre drove in 6 total runs while Chasse helped out with 2 RBIs. Kevin Romero had 2 RBI's for the Raiders as Rivier could amass just 7 total hits over the course of the two games.
