Cohoon's late goal lifts Women's Soccer past Fitchburg State, 1-0

(Nashua, N.H.) Senior Maggie Cohoon's (Derry. N.H.) first goal of the season came at the right moment as the Rivier University Women's Soccer team edged the visiting Fitchburg State University Falcons, 1-0 in a non-conference contest at Raider Field. The win was the first for the Raiders in 2016 as they are now 1-2-1 on the young season. Fitchburg State, meanwhile, falls to 2-3.

The game featured a scoreless first half with ample opportunities for both offenses. Junior goalkeeper Lauren Goodspeed (Merrimack, N.H.) turned away all three shots she faced in the stanza while her counterpart, Alexandra Foster made a key stop on the only shot that the Raiders put on net.

Entering the 77th minute of play, the Raiders were finally able to capitalize on a scoring opportunity. Senior Jackie Russo (Saugus, Mass.) sent a solid thru ball to spring Cohoon past the backline. Cohoon then converted her fourth shot on net for the only tally of the game.

Goodspeed made sure the shutout and the win was preserved as she was able to deny a late scoring opportunity with time winding down.

The Raiders will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Raider Field (3:00 pm). Fitchburg State will also return to conference action on Saturday as they host Framingham State at 3pm.
