Baseball: Lyszczyk records first hit and RBI in the DH setback to Baruch

FORT MYERS, FLA. – Freshman Marika Lyszczyk (Delta, B.C.) recorded her first collegiate hit this afternoon as the Rivier University Baseball team suffered a pair of losses to Baruch College, 15-0 and 17-3 inside the Lee County Player Development Complex. The two setbacks slide the Raiders overall record to 2-5 on the young season while the Bearcats begin their season at 3-0.

Game One: Baruch College 15, Rivier University 0 (Final)

The Raider offense couldn't keep pace with their Monday output as they were shutout in the opener to Baruch, 15-0.

Junior Ryan Schaefer (Everett, Mass.) fell to 0-3 on the year as he was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) on four hits and walking five while striking out five in his 2.2 innings of work.

Rivier managed to get six hits off Baruch starter Paul Sirakowski, who spun the complete game shutout striking out nine and walking one over the seven innings of work. Sophomore Corey Cochran went 1-for-4 to extend his season opening hitting streak to five games and senior Eric Maxfield (Lowell, Mass.) added a pinch hit single in his only plate appearance.

The Bearcats were guided by the 3-for-3 games from Luke Lombardi and Eric Diaz, who each added a RBI and scored two runs in the win. Also going perfect at the dish were Thomas Drouin and Kevin Linitz as they each finished game one going 2-for-2.

Game Two: Baruch College 19, Rivier University 3 (Final)

A seven-run top of the first inning sealed the fate of the Raiders they dropped the back-half of the day's double-header to Baruch, 19-3.

Sophomore Devin Albino (North Smithfield, R.I.) earned his first collegiate start on the mound for Rivier and suffered the loss as he allowed nine runs (all earned) on 14 hits while striking out two. Cochran and Schaefer each contributed with two-hit ballgames while freshman Ryan-Anthony Condon (Nashua, N.H.) added a RBI ground out.

The highlight of the game for the Raiders came in the second inning when Lyszczyk smacked a RBI single through the right side that eluded the outstretched glove of the second baseman for her first collegiate hit and run batted in. She finished the contest 1-for-2 with a walk.

Liam O'Gara paced the offensive attack for Baruch as he finished the contest going 4-for-5 and Diaz chipped in with another three-hit performance. Also shining bright at the plate for the Bearcats were Nicholas Umile and Steven Patterson, who each collected three base hits with Patterson knocking in three RBI.

Rivier will wrap up their annual pilgrimage to Fort Myers, Florida tomorrow morning with a double-header against Saint John's University. Game one is set to start at 9am at the Lee County Player Development Complex.
