Baseball: Lyszczyk makes history in setback to Thiel

FORT MYERS, FLA. – The Rivier University Baseball team escaped the cold-weather this afternoon as they began their annual trip to Southwest Florida with a 12-3 setback to Thiel College on Roberto Clemente Field inside the Terry Park Sports Complex. The loss sends the Raiders to 0-3 on the season while Thiel earns their first win and are now 1-0.

The game was one of significance as Rivier University freshman Marika Lyszczyk (Delta, B.C., Canada) became the first female in program history to play for Rivier as she started behind the plate and went 0-for-2 at the plate with a strikeout and a groundout to third.

Junior Dan White (Augusta, Maine) suffered the loss on the mound as the right-hander allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits while issuing four walks and striking out one. Freshman Patrick Quinn (Seabrook, N.H.) was the most effective reliever as he tossed 2.1 innings giving up two unearned runs on one hit and striking out two.

Offensively the Raiders pounded out nine hits led by sophomore Corey Cochran (Salem, N.H.), who finished 2-for-4 with a runs scored and a RBI. Classmate Devin Albino (North Smithfield, R.I.) also finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and fellow sophomore Jalen Shirley (Fishers, Ind.) added a RBI single on his 1-for-4 showing at the dish.

Thiel was powered by the bat of catcher Andrew Giesey, who went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI. Christian Aldrich collected three hits on the afternoon and Anthony Sebastian scored three runs while going 1-for-3 at the plate with a RBI.

Sante Carducci was credited with the win as he pitched five inning surrendering two runs (both earned) on five hits and recording six strikeouts.

The Raiders will be back out in the Florida sunshine tomorrow afternoon as they battle against Finlandia University in a 12pm double-header at the Player Development Complex.
