Raiders Left Out in the Cold – Fall 11 – 7 to Lancers

Nashua, NH, Raider Field – The Rivier University Raiders (0-1, 0-0 GNAC) fell to the visiting Worcester State Lancers (1-0, 0-0 MASCAC) 11-7 Wednesday night.  On a night when the weather could have been the story, the two teams worked their way through the snowfall in the first half to play out a close four goal game with the visiting Lancers pulling away in the second half after a 6-4 halftime lead.

The two teams traded goals over the opening ten minutes with the Raiders opening up the scoring on a goal from Savannah Neuwirt (Junior - Newbury, NH) with an assist from Elena Reilly (Sophomore - Braintree, MA).  The visitors answered on an unassisted goal from Jackie Connors (So. - Ashland, MA).  Rebecca Wickens (Senior - Tyngsboro, MA) put the Raiders back in front with an answering goal and an assist from Neuwirt.  Vicki O'Brien (Sr. - Canton, MA) pulled the Lancers even on a free position shot.  Connors struck two more times to close out the half and pace the visitors to a 6-4 halftime lead.  Amanda Wickens (Freshman - Tyngsboro, MA) and Hannah Wyatt (Senior - Merrimack, NH) scored for the Raiders to keep them within two.   

Worcester State punched in two more goals to start the second half with Alaina Martin (Fr. - E. Longmeadow, MA) and Molly Kilday (Jr. - Westford, MA) pushing the Lancers into an 8-4 lead.  Rivier was able to cut the lead back to two on goals from Amanda Wickens and Jessica Amaral (Senior - E. Providence, RI).  O'Brien pushed the Lancers back up by three with another strike.  But the home team stayed close with another goal from Amanda Wickens.  Worcester State finally pulled away down the stretch adding two goals, O'Brien contributing the final strike for the visitor's 11-7 win.   

Rivier was paced on the day by Amanda Wickens with three goals, five shots, three ground balls; Amaral with one goal, two assists, four shots, two groundballs; and Neuwirt with one goal, one assist, three groundballs.  Danielle Moran (Sophomore - San Diego, CA) made sixteen saves in goal, including ten saves in the first half.

Worcester State was led by Connors with three goals, one assist; O'Brien with three goals, seven shots, three ground balls; Angelina Sutherland (Fr. – Tyngsboro, MA) one assist, eight ground balls; and Kilday with two goals, one assist, ten shots.  Lea Robichaud (Fr. - Holden, MA) made nine saves in goal for the Lancers.

With the loss, the Raiders are 0-1 to start the season and yet to open play in the GNAC.  Worcester State opens up at 1-0 to start their season.  The Raiders return to action Tuesday, March 18th at home versus Albertus Magnus in a GNAC match-up at 3:30 pm.  Worcester State returns to action on March 12th at home versus Manhattanville.
