Men's Soccer: Overtime goal downs Raiders against Lasell, 3-2

NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier University Men's Soccer team lost a heart-breaker this afternoon at Joanne Merrill Field as they fell to visiting Lasell University, 3-2 in overtime on Senior Day for the Raiders. The loss sends Rivier to an overall record of 1-15-1 and 0-10-0 in the conference while the Lasers improved to 6-13-0 on the year and evens up at 5-5-0 in the GNAC.

Prior to the start of the contest, the Men's Soccer program honored their four graduating seniors – Collin Deyarmin (Raymond, N.H.), Cam Holdsworth (Pelham, N.H.), Zach Pontarelli (Coventry, R.I.) and Ramon Bonfante (Lowell, Mass.) – with a short ceremony with their friends and families.

Rivier took the early advantage in the 20th minute as freshman Anthony Zucco (North Andover, Mass.) broke away from the pack and scored his 3rd goal of the year. A few minutes later the Lasers responded. Sophomore Edson DaSilva (Hingham, Mass.) collected a through ball from classmate Kyle Stewart (Webster, Mass.) to even the score.

It would remain a 1-1 affair until the 62nd minute when sophomore Jake Ouellette (East Granby, Conn.) blasted a shot from 40 yards away that just got over the outstretched arms of the keeper. Stewart was credited with the assist on Ouellette's 2nd goal of the season.

Pushing the attack, the Raiders received a penalty shot after a foul occurred inside the 18 yard box. Freshman Kelvin Cortez (Meriden, Conn.) converted the PK for his team leading 6th goal on the rookie campaign and it knotted things up at 2-2.

In the overtime period, junior Simon Nigro (Simsbury, Conn.) flashed some fancy footwork moves and was able to send a through ball to sophomore Chandler Ray (Stonington, Conn.), who was standing inside the six and netted the game winner. It was Ray's 1st goal of the year and it sent the Lasers home with a win.

Senior Collin Deyarmin (Raymond, N.H.) received the honorary start in net on senior night but was replaced by sophomore Cody Richards (Colebrook, N.H.). Richards finished the game with five saves on eight shots. For Lasell, senior keeper Chris Tran (Nantucket, Mass.) started the contest and allowed one goal before being replaced (injury) by classmate Jackson Burhans (Berlin, N.Y.). Burhands made two saves on three chances in the win for the Lasers.

Rivier will close out the 2019 season on Wednesday night as they host Suffolk University at Joanne Merrill Field. Game time is set for 7pm.
