Softball: Raiders Sweep AMCats in GNAC Conference Showdown

Paxton, Mass. - The Rivier University softball program is off to a phenominal start this spring with an overall record of 5-1 and 3-1 in conference play.

How It Happened:

Game One

The match was scoreless until the bases were loaded at the top of the third inning when Katerina St. Angelo (Johnston, R.I.) reached first off a fielder error sending newcomers Amanda Atkinson (Mason, N.H.) and Alyssa Alicia Mckenna (Litchfield, N.H.) home. The Raiders struck again in the fourth inning the AMCats committed a pair of miscues that sent McKenna home for her second run. 

The AMCats narrowed the Raiders lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the 6th off a two-run homer from freshman Kiara Edmonds (Lynn, Mass.).

Rivier responded with five runs and four hits in the seventh to sure up the win. 

Game Two 

The Raiders were consistent in their scoreing ways with three runs in the first three innings. Kasey Smith crossed the plate in the first off a sacrifice fly, Capra and Amanda Atkinson both scored of a ground out to second base. AMCats responded with a couple runs in the third. One of which was a fielding error. 

Rivier managed to punch in four more runs after nine solid hits before the end of the day.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Katerina St. Angelo earned two RBI's to add to her season total of 5. She leads the Raiders in this category. 
  • The Raiders tallied 6 stolen bases in game two.
  • Senior pitcher Kellie Kennedy (Hudson, N.H.) tallied 5 strikeouts in 7 innings allowing only 7 hits in game one.
  • Junior pitcher Sydney Greeno (Shirley, Mass.) handled game two earning 10 K's and gave up 9 hits in 7 innings.  
  • Smith earned 4 stolen bases and currently sits third in the conference for stolen bases. 
  • The team earned 22 hits today

UP NEXT:

The Raiders (5-1) will host the Falcons of Fisher College this Wednesday.  The first pitch  of this double header will be thrown at 6PM.
