Blue Jays Fly by Women’s Lacrosse

WEST HARTFORD, CT: Rivier women's lacrosse lost to the University of Saint Joseph today in conference play on the road.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 4/8/23

- Score: USJ 16, Rivier 5

- Records: Rivier (3-6, 2-6 GNAC), USJ (7-5, 3-5 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- USJ put away four goals in the first quarter. Blue Jays' Lauryn Wilks earned the first goal of the game, Ashley Rufo scored on a player up opportunity and on a free position shot, Makenzie Dinger added another goal on a free position shot, and Morgan Rhoades knocked in the fourth goal at 2:18 on the clock. Rachel Hinkley (Swedesboro, NJ) found the back of the net on a free position shot to finish out the quarter.

- USJ's Rhoades netted her second goal of the game to start off the second quarter with an assist credited to Rufo. Wilks put away a Blue Jays goal, increasing their lead to 6-1. Sarah Lachance (Chelmsford, MA) of Rivier buried a free position shot, chipping away at the score. USJ's May Tomko ran past Riv's defenders to score with an assist from Dinger. Cassie Hemmerdinger (Pelham, NH) was able to find Caitlin Newell (Litchfield, NH) by the net who tossed in a Raiders goal. Lachance scored her second free position goal of the game at 1:21 in the second quarter. Rufo collected a Blue Jays goal with 29 seconds left in the half.

- In the third quarter, Dinger scored on a free position shot putting USJ up by 5, Rufo added on two free position goals, and Wilks contributed with her own goal. Lachance snuck in a goal for the Raiders at 5:22 on the clock.

- The Raiders were scoreless in the fourth quarter. Four goals were scored by USJ credited to Dinger, Tomko, Wilks (assisted by Dinger), and Rufo (assisted by Dinger).

- Lindsey Kruger (New Bedford, MA) of Rivier saved 13 shots today. Colleen Stringer of USJ recorded 16 saves, earning the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Shots: USJ 41, Rivier 30

- Ground Balls: USJ 43, Rivier 30

- Penalties: Rivier received three yellow cards, USJ received two yellow cards
