Raiders On The Front Lines: Alex Trevains '18

Story written and posted by Anthony Perry, Rivier University Sports Information Director

NASHUA, N.H. – “Raiders on the Front Lines” is a collection of stories detailing how our Raiders are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. These stories are first-hand journal entries from our current or former student-athletes that are working in hospitals across the country.

Today we are highlighting former Women’s Volleyball student-athlete, Alex Trevains. She graduated from Rivier with her BSN and RN in 2018. Alex was a four-year member of the Women’s Volleyball program, appearing in 84 games (211 sets) while collecting 212 kills, 20 service aces and 89 total blocks. She was also a member of the 2014 Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship squad that advanced to the NCAA Division III Regionals.

Alex currently works in the Fuller Unit at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, New Hampshire.

In her own words:

“I would have never pictured starting my career as a new nurse in the middle of a pandemic. Being a new nurse is already overwhelming and can be terrifying at times, now with COVID-19 you could say these emotions are heightened. I am so thankful and proud to be a part of the Fuller Unit at the Elliot Hospital. Our hospital has come together as a giant team supporting one another to successfully and safely care for our patients.

As a Rivier Volleyball Alumni, I have been able to implement many of Coach Kolek’s pearls of wisdom into my practice as a nurse. During this stressful time, I have been using mindfulness exercises daily, which Coach incorporated into every season. It’s been helpful to use during a stressful shift as well as to unwind after a long shift. Coach always told us to look 200 feet ahead, which is how far headlights can see at night. You can only go so far and accomplish so much at once. Take it one day at a time and tackle it step by step, which is exactly what we have been doing at our hospital.

Thank you to everyone in the community for your donations and support. Please continue to stay home and practice social distancing so healthcare professionals can continue to care for patients and stay healthy.”
