Women’s Soccer Stifled by JWU-Providence

NASHUA, N.H. - The Rivier women's soccer team lost to JWU-Providence by a final score of 4-2 in rainy Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at home on Merrill Field this morning.

In the 22nd minute of the first half, Emily DeRoehn of JWU-Providence (14-2-3, 14-0-0 GNAC) fired a shot at Riv (9-5-3, 8-4-2 GNAC) goalkeeper Bri Nugent who was unable to collect the ball cleanly, resulting in a Wildcats' tap-in by Kylie Schmidt.

Early in the second half, DeRoehn collected her second goal of the game from a penalty kick at 46:43, to increase JWU-Providence's lead to two.

Jordan Butters was able to find Kaylee Magoon in the box in the 53rd minute of the contest, where she swiftly tapped in the ball to record the first Rivier goal, cutting the Raiders' deficit to one.

With 20 minutes to play, Magoon launched the ball from deep, which tipped off the JWU's goalkeeper's fingers and into the net for her second goal of the game to tie the score at 2-2.

After a Rivier foul with roughly 10 minutes remaining awarded the Wildcats a free kick, Jessica Lee soared the ball into the box which found the head of Grace Sheehan who knocked it past Nugent to take the lead back, 3-2.

JWU's Angelina Oliveira would later score an insurance goal while fighting off Riv defenders at the box to ensure the Wildcats' unblemished conference record would remain intact.

The Wildcats outshot the Raiders 29-5 and produced seven corner kick tries.

Goalkeeper Bri Nugent of Rivier made eight saves in net this morning.

The Raiders will play their final regular-season GNAC matchup on the road against Emmanuel on Monday, Oct. 23 kicking off at 7:00 p.m. on Roberto Clemente Field.
