Women’s Lacrosse Runs Past Thomas (Me.), 13-6

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Rivier women's lacrosse team used a five-goal night from Sarah Lachance and 11 saves in net by Lindsey Kruger to down Thomas (Me.) in non-conference action on Tuesday evening at Smith Field.

The Raiders improved to 2-1 on the year while the Terriers dropped down to 1-2.

Rivier got things underway with back-to-back goals spanning 1:02 to take a 2-0 lead with 11:06 left in the first quarter. Thomas would answer with two goals of its own over a 1:03 span to tie things up. Riv's Ashley Wilder would score and assist the next two goals as the Raiders took a 4-2 lead with 4:53 left in the opening period. The Terriers scored off a turnover with 1:08 left to cut the deficit to one goal after 15 minutes of action.

Early in the second, Rivier's Sofia Cebrero capitalized off a Thomas clear failure and put her team back up by two. Both teams would trade goals to keep the game at a two-goal margin at halftime with the Raiders leading 6-4.

Rivier would outscore the Terriers in the third, 3-0, with goals coming from Caitlin Newell, Lachance, and Chiara Skeels.

The Raiders would pour on two more goals in the opening two minutes of the fourth to give themselves a comfortable 11-4 lead as they ran away with their second victory of the campaign.

Lindsey Kruger made 11 saves in net as Rivier narrowly put more shots on target, 12-11. Lachance's five goals were the most of any player. She also recorded a team-best three ground balls. Newell registered two goals and two assists while earning three draw controls and scooping two ground balls. Cassie Hemmerdinger recorded eight draw controls, two ground balls, and an assist in the triumph.

The Raiders edged the Terriers in draw controls, 13-9, and ground balls, 12-10.

Rivier will head to Northfield, Vt. for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) North Division showdown on Saturday, March 16 for a 4:00 p.m. start at Sabine Field. In last year's clash at Merrill Field, Rivier prevailed in overtime by a final score of 10-9.
