Women’s Lacrosse Rallies to Down Mass. Maritime, 10-8

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Rivier women's lacrosse team outscored the Buccaneers 6-2 in the second half to rally to a 10-8 victory over Mass. Maritime in the season opener on Tuesday night at Clean Harbors Stadium.

This is the second straight year the Raiders have opened the campaign with a victory. The Buccaneers suffered their first setback and sit at 2-1.

Mass. Maritime jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter, with Sarah Lachance getting Rivier on the board with an unassisted tally with under a minute to play.

Lachance would follow that up with another goal 22 seconds into the second to cut the Raiders' deficit to one. The Buccaneers rallied to regain a two-goal advantage as Allie Dickinson scored twice in the final 2:35 to give the home team a 6-4 edge at halftime.

In the third, Lachance once again made her mark on the offensive end, first assisting on Ashley Wilder's goal before converting on two free position shots of her own to give Rivier its first lead at 7-6.

Mass. Maritime would tie the score up twice in the fourth, but a Sofia Cebrero strike with 9:05 left to play would prove to be the difference. Lachance recorded her sixth goal with 4:25 to add a cushion as Rivier held on for a 10-8 victory.

Lachance scored six goals and recorded two assists in the victory. Both Cebrero and Caitlin Newell posted one goal, one assist performances. Cassie Hemmerdinger registered four draw controls, caused four turnovers, and scooped two ground balls. Goalkeeper Lindsey Kruger made 12 saves in the victory.

The Raiders return to action on Sunday, March 10 when they welcome Saint Joseph (Conn.) to Merrill Field for a 4:00 p.m. start.
