Women’s Hockey Downed in Inaugural Game by Spartans

NASHUA, NH: The Rivier women's ice hockey team played their first ever game this afternoon at Conway Arena against the Spartans of Castleton University. The Raiders were shut out in the contest falling to them 6-0.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 10/29/2021

- Score: Castleton 6, Rivier 0

- Records: Castleton (1-0), Rivier (0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The Spartans coincidentally scored two goals in each period. Period one had Nancy Benedict start it off at 7:44. Her goal was followed up by Samantha Lawler at 19:29, who scored a power play goal.

-  The second period followed the same trend, with Benedict scoring her second goal of the game. Julia Carpenter netted the fourth goal for Castleton.

- The third consisted of two new players for the Spartans who would score. Alex Johnson found the back of the net just 3:25 into the period. Four minutes later, a shorthanded goal was scored by Brooke Greenwood.

- For the Raiders, Madelyn Morgan (Riverside, CA) saw 59 shots on net and saved an incredible 53 of them. Offensively, Ellie Grady (Kingston, MA) led the team in shots with two.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Shots: Castleton 59, Rivier 7

-  Penalties: Castleton 12 minutes on six infractions, Rivier 14 minutes on seven infractions

-  Power Plays: Castleton was 1 for 7, while Rivier was 0 for 6.

- Rivier women's hockey is back in action tomorrow when they travel to play Castleton again at 4 pm.
