Women's Basketball Handles Wheaton (Mass.) in Tip-Off Tournament Consolation Game, 68-50

NORTON, Mass. – Behind 22 points from Alexa Dufries, the Rivier women's basketball team finished off its weekend at the Wheaton Tip-Off Tournament with a 68-50 victory over the host institution on Saturday afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium. The Raiders jumped back above .500 and now hold a 2-1 overall record, while the Lyons fell to 0-2.

Rivier took an 18-12 lead after the first quarter thanks to seven points on 75% shooting from Dufries. Jessica Carrier and Anna Stenger each added two assists apiece in the opening 10 minutes.

Both teams would muster 10 points aside in the second quarter as Rivier held a 28-22 lead at halftime.

Wheaton would tie the game on three straight buckets coming out of the break to put the pressure on the Raiders. A three-pointer from Lyric Grumblatt would stop the skid, giving Rivier the lead right back. Another Grumblatt three with 46 seconds left in the third would give the Raiders their largest cushion of the night to that point as they now led by 15.

With a 49-36 lead with 10 minutes left in regulation, Rivier held off a Wheaton comeback bid as Dufries poured in nine points on 3-of-7 shooting in the quarter to shut down the Lyons and give her squad its second win of the campaign.

Grumblatt finished with 19 points along with six rebounds, five steals, and two assists. Hannah Muchemore also finished in double digits as she totaled 10 points with two assists and two steals. Bea Stafford brought down a team-high seven rebounds in the triumph.

Rivier shot 37.5% from three-point range, while the Lyons missed all 14 attempts from the same distance.

The Raiders will be back in action in a non-conference home game against Granite State foe, Plymouth St., on Tuesday, Nov. 14 with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m. at Muldoon Gymnasium.
