Medlin’s Late Goal Clinches Tie with Colby-Sawyer

NASHUA, N.H. – First-year midfielder Jayden Medlin scored his first collegiate goal in the final minutes to provide Rivier men's soccer a precious 1-1 draw against Colby-Sawyer in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Wednesday night at Merrill Field. The Raiders now sit at 1-4-4 (1-3-1 GNAC) while the Chargers now hold a record of 2-4-3 (1-2-1 GNAC).

In the early portion of the first half, Rivier goalkeeper Dominic Cunha was put to the test as he extended to knock a Jonathan Platti free kick off the crossbar. With 22:58 elapsed in the first half, Colby-Sawyer's Brandon Mejia found Jonathan Platti in space, who fired a shot off the post. Nearly 15 minutes later, the Chargers would break the deadlock as Judson DiMaria headed in a corner kick from David Herrera to put the visitors up 1-0 going into the half.

Over five minutes into the second half, Rivier had a scoring chance when a deep feed from back Chris Antonelli found a streaking Jason Harlow in stride, however, Harlow's attempt was thwarted at the top of the box by an adventurous Yener Bartolon.

After being subbed on with less than six minutes to play in the match, Medlin made his presence known, burying a cross from Drew Sacca to equalize the match at 1-1. The Raiders would have two more shots on goal in a last-ditch effort to steal a victory, but Bartolon was up to the task on each. Sean Seeley, who subbed in for Cunha in the second half due to injury, dove out to stuff a Platti opportunity in the final minute and preserve the tie.

Both teams fired 11 shots in the contest, with Colby-Sawyer putting six on net to Rivier's four. The Raiders narrowly edged the Chargers in corners, 3-2.

Rivier will continue its four-game homestand in a Saturday, Sept. 30 GNAC matchup against Norwich, set to kick off at 3:00 p.m. as part of a Rivier Alumni Reunion Weekend triple-header from Merrill Field.
