Men’s Soccer Rookies Shine in 2-0 Win Over Regis

NASHUA, N.H. – The Rivier men's soccer team earned their first overall and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory of the season by shutting out the Pride of Regis at home on Merrill Field this evening by a final score of 2-0.

The Raiders and the Pride battled to keep possession throughout the contest, but after a scoreless first half, Hayden Bilodeau was able to get a touch on the ball generated by a Riv corner kick allowing first-year Mitchell Ward to tap in a backheel shot past the Regis keeper to put the Raiders up 1-0.

Minutes later, first-year Mathews Ferreira beat all of the Pride defenders and launched a shot into the lower left corner, with Ward being credited with the assist.

Riv outshot Regis, 23 to 16, although Regis did have one more corner kick than Rivier.

Goalkeeper Dominic Cunha of the Raiders made four saves, gaining the win and the shutout. Ward and Ferreira each recorded their first collegiate goals in the triumph.

The Raiders are back in GNAC play at Lasell with a start time of 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21 at Taylor Field.
