Men’s Lacrosse Downs Maine Maritime

CASTINE, ME: The Rivier men's lacrosse team defeated Maine Maritime this afternoon in non-conference play.  

THE BASICS:

- Date: 4/2/22

- Score: Rivier 11, Maritime 9

- Records: Rivier (7-2), Maritime (3-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The first quarter saw the Raiders jump out to a quick 4-0 lead. Chris Heitmiller (Nashua, NH) got the scoring started on a man-up opportunity. Trevor Reilly (Newington, CT) followed just under three minutes later to give Rivier a 2-0 lead. The following two goals were scored by Alan Cozzolino (Hamden, CT). The first came at the 3:33 mark and was on the Raiders second man-up opportunity. His next goal came with 1:53 left in the first. Maritime would get on the board before the end of the first quarter on an Alex Stevens goal.

- The second quarter had Maritime shrink their deficit to just two goals before the break. Nicholas Tavares (Danvers, MA) would put in the first goal of the second quarter to bump the Raiders up to a 5-1 lead. However, Sam Nichols and Jayden Wilson would answer back to put that game a 5-3 in the visiting team's favor.

- Rivier would open the second half on a 3-0 run with goals coming from Jeffery Potter (N. Bennington, VT), a third from Cozzolino, and Michael Ference's (Salem, NH) first of the game. With the score now at 8-3, Maritime would find the back of the net twice before the quarter ended. Stevens would net his second goal on the day, followed by Brendan Reddington to shrink their deficit to three.

- Maritime would go on to outscore the Raiders in the fourth quarter 4-to-3, but it wouldn't be enough. Wilson started off the scoring for the home team marking his second and third goals of the game to bring them within one. Potter and Ference would respond ended the four-goal run for Maritime. Stevens would put up two more goals for Maine, marking his third and fourth of the contest. Heitmiller would tack on one more for the Raiders to give them the 11-9 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Sawyer Gagnon (Gorham, ME) would get his seventh win in net after saving 12 of 21 shots faced.

-  Stevens would top all scorers this afternoon with 4 goals and 2 assists.

-  Cozzolino would top the Raiders offense with 3 goals and 2 assists.

- Rivier men's lacrosse will be back next Wednesday when they travel to Paxton, Massachusetts, to take on the AMCATS of Anna Maria College.
