Men’s Lacrosse Wins Close Contest with Mass Maritime

NASHUA, NH: The Rivier men's lacrosse team defeated the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy in non-conference action this evening.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 3/16/22

- Score: Rivier 7, MMA 6

- Records: Rivier (3-1), MMA (1-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  It was a tale of two halves in this one. The Raiders came out firing on all cylinders giving the Bucs little possession time. Rivier would net all four goals in the first quarter, Michael Ference (Salem, NH) would get it started for the Raiders. He was followed by Jeffery Potter (N. Bennington, VT), who took advantage of a man up opportunity. Trevor Reilly () would keep it going with the third Rivier goal at the 3:44 mark. Chris Heitmiller (Nashua, NH) would finish off the quarter with his first of the contest to give Rivier the 4-0 lead.

- Only two goals were scored in the second quarter, one for each team to give the Raiders a 5-1 lead going into the break. Ference would net his second goal of the game to give the Raiders a 5-0 lead on another man up opportunity. Maritime would put one up on the board with 6:44 left in the second, also being a man up, on a Braeden Kosiewicz goal.

- The Third quarter saw Maritime outscore Riv 3-1 to cut their deficit to just two goals. Jack Iversen started the scoring in the second half for the Bucs. Rivier's Coby Mercier (Boscawen, NH) would tack on one more with 5:07 remaining. Kosiewicz, followed by Nick Lamattina, would put the score at 6-4 still in the Raiders favor.

- The fourth was again won by Maritime, two goals to Rivier's one. Potter did, however, score the first goal in the fourth, which ultimately gave Riv the win. However, the Bucs weren't done getting the score within one after a Ryan Cameron Goal and a second by Lamattina. The Bucs were set up to tie the game up with less than 30 seconds left, but a costly turnover by a player stepping out on the endline sealed it for the Raiders.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Sawyer Gagnon (Gorham, ME) picked up win number three in net after stopping 15 shots.
