Men’s Hockey Comes Back to Pick Up First Win in Program History

NASHUA, NH: The Rivier men's hockey team found themselves down early in their inaugural game but fought their way back from down as many as three goals to take down Southern New Hampshire University 5-4.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 10/29/2021

- Score: Rivier 5, SNHU 4

- Records: SNHU (0-1), Rivier (1-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The first period was an even battle with a slight edge to the Penmen, who were able to go up 1-0 on a powerplay goal 9:32 into the period by Cole Stewart.

-  The Second period was a free for all for both teams offensively, being that there were seven goals scored between them. SNHU started it off just one minute in with a Jake Cox score. Rivier got on the board just three minutes later for their first goal in program history, going to Hunter Phillips (Quincy, MA) on a powerplay. That goal by Phillips would be the first of four consecutive powerplay goals between the two teams.

- The Penmen would tack on two more goals to go up 4-1, with goals from George Thurston and Joseph Fiorino. However, for SNHU, the Raiders would close out the period on a 3-0 run to tie the game at four all. Ryan Nolte (Canton, MA) would start the rally for Riv at the 15 minute mark with the final powerplay goal. Jon Tavella (E. Longmeadow, MA) followed with back-to-back scores to tally two goals in the contest.

- The third period was more down-to-earth as only one goal was scored, and it was by the Raiders to get their first win in program history. The game winning goal was netted by Milan Breczko (Klasterec, Czech) 12:52 into the third period.
