Pitchers Deal In Baseball’s 6-2 Win Over Eastern Nazarene

NASHUA, N.H. – Thanks to strong pitching performances and clutch hitting, the Rivier baseball team prevailed over Eastern Nazarene, 6-2, in a non-conference matchup at Holman Stadium on Tuesday evening.

With the win the Raiders improved to 6-15 while the Lions dropped to 4-13-1.

The Raiders showed patience early to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first by scoring a run without recording a hit when Frank Gulezian tallied his seventh RBI of the year on a bases-loaded walk.

The Lions responded with two runs of their own in the top of the third off back-to-back fielding errors to take a 2-1 lead.

The bats started to heat up for the Raiders in the bottom of the third as Colton Colleran singled down the right field line and was immediately brought home off a JD Normand triple to bring the game level at 2-2. Luis Tejada imprinted his name into the book by recording his seventh RBI of the year, bringing Normand in for a run on a triple to center to give the Raiders a 3-2 lead at the end of the third frame.

The Raiders pushed their lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth by way of a Luis Colon two-RBI single. A Kyle Hsu hit-by-pitch RBI in the bottom of the fifth would round out the scoring for the Raiders and propel the lead to 6-2.

First-year right-hander Anthony Carey impressed in his first collegiate start tossing four innings and only allowing two runs and three walks while tallying four strikeouts. Carey was relieved in the fifth inning by Travis McKeen who pitched four scoreless innings and provided seven strikeouts of his own to earn his first collegiate victory. Ty Baker entered to close things down in the ninth, striking out one of the four batters faced.

Up next, Rivier travels to Dean for a Great Northeast Athletic matchup at the Longley Athletic Complex on Wednesday, April 10 at 3:30 p.m.
