Baseball Falls in Doubleheader with Dean

FRANKLIN, Mass. – April 3, 2022 – The Rivier baseball team dropped a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games to Dean College on Sunday. The Bulldogs took game one 6-2 and followed with a walk-off 14-13 victory in game two. 

Dean has won four in a row to improve to 4-12 overall and is now 2-1 in the GNAC. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play at Albertus Magnus on Monday at 4 p.m. Rivier falls to 1-16 overall and 0-6 in the conference. The Raiders will host Springfield on Thursday at 6 p.m.

GAME ONE – Dean 6, Rivier 2

Senior Tyler McAloon (Berkley, Mass.) earned the start on the mound for the Bulldogs and sat down the Raiders in order via the strikeout to begin the game. 

At the plate in the first, senior Ryan Gallagher (Methuen, Mass.) gave Dean a 2-0 lead with a double that scored Matty Troy (Norwalk, Conn.) and senior Josh Cerretani (Peabody, Mass.).

In the fifth, senior Dan Lilja (Lynn, Mass.) singled home Troy and then scored on a Gallagher triple. Gallagher was brought in by a Brayden McLaughlin (Forest Grove, Ore.) single to put Dean in front 5-0 after five frames.

Rivier got on the board in the sixth with an RBI double from senior Conor Dines (Framingham, Mass.).

The Bulldogs got the run back in the bottom of the sixth when Cerretani scored on a Troy double.

The Raiders added a run in the top of the seventh on a ground rule double by Alex Currie (Uxbridge, Mass.), but McAloon escaped further damage to earn the 6-2 win. 

McAloon went the distance with two runs on seven hits and nine strikeouts to get his first win of the season.

Senior Devin Albino (North Smithfield, R.I.) took the loss with five runs on nine hits in four innings.

Gallagher was a homerun short of the cycle to finish 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Cerretani, McLaughlin, and Troy each finished with two hits.

Dines had two hits for the Raiders.

GAME TWO – Dean 14, Rivier 13

The second game featured 27 runs and 25 hits.

Trailing 13-12 in the bottom of the seventh, junior Brian Dovidio (Ramsey, N.J.) came around on a single and a throwing error with the game-tying run. Gallagher then delivered the walk-off hit that scored senior Chaz Stolba (Trumbull, Conn.) with the winning run.

Dean put a run across in the first inning and then scored twice in the second on freshman Cam Watkins' (East Haddam, Conn.) first career home run.

Rivier scored a run in the third and fourth before Dean added a run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead after four.

The Raiders then plated six runs in the fifth as they benefited from several walks and a two-run single from Corey Cochran (Salem, N.H.).

Dean responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 8-8. Sophomore Kyle Lancaster (Dartmouth, Mass.) had a bases clearing double in the inning.

After Rivier took a 13-8 lead in the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs came back again to pull within 13-12 by scoring four times on four hits.

Freshman pitcher Tyler Fleet (Fall River, Mass.) got the Raiders in order in the top of the seventh to give the Bulldogs a chance in their last at-bat.

Fleet earned his first career win with a clean frame. Senior Jake Mainey (Merrimack, N.H.) was saddled with the loss with 1.1 innings pitched, two runs and four hits.

Freshman Ryan Desmond (Long Island, N.Y.) was a perfect 5-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs.  Dovidio went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs.

Sophomore Jacob Boudreau (Auburn, N.H.) led the Rivier batters with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate.
