Baseball Drops Season Opener

MYRTLE BEACH, SC: The Rivier baseball team fell in their season opener in a back and forth game with Fredonia in non-conference action.  

THE BASICS:

- Date: 3/6/22

- Score: Fredonia 14, Rivier 10

- Records: Fredonia (2-0), Rivier (0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Rivier got the game started with a bang on a leadoff triple by Corey Cochran (Salem, NH), who would later score the game's first run on a wild pitch.  

- Fredonia would tie it up in the second and eventually take a 5-1 lead through three innings of play. A big two-run shot from Fredonia's Pat Bigham assisted in their growing lead.

- But the Raiders wouldn't go away, fighting their way back with discipline at bats and timely hitting. Rivier drew nine walks and numerous hit by pitches, causing the opposing team's pitchers to be working out of the stretch every inning for the majority of them.

- The Raiders would take the lead back in the 6th inning and build it to a two-run lead at 8-6 through seven innings. Zach White (Long Beach, CA) delivered the big hit, driving in two, to bring the game to 7-6. Jacob Boudreau (Auburn, NH) would tack one more on after hitting a double in the seventh.

- Fredonia wasted little time behind as they went off for their biggest inning of the day scoring six runs to take the lead back. A string of walks and singles helped put the visiting team back on top. AJ Kinney had the biggest hit in the inning, scoring two on a single to center field.

- Rivier would go down with a bang, with Cochran hitting a two-run bomb to deep left field to get the final 14-10.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  AJ Kinney, Luke Kenyon, and Jake Wentland all had three hits for Fredonia. Kinney Produced the most with 3 RBIs.

-  Cochran was 2-for-5 on the day with the triple and home run. He ended the day with two RBI's

Cole Bekeritis (Ipswich, MA) was a perfect 2-for-2 on the day with two walks and two RBIs.

- Rivier baseball is back in action tomorrow afternoon against Hilbert College at 3:30 PM and 6:15 PM.
