Women's Volleyball: Raiders take two from Gordon & UMPI

(Wenham, Mass.) The Rivier University Women's Volleyball team picked up a pair of non-conference wins this afternoon as they defeated Gordon College and the University of Maine-Presque Isle in a Tri-Match hosted by the Fighting Scots. The victories improve the overall record for the Raiders to 13-5 on the season.

Game One: Rivier University 3, Gordon College 1 (Final)

After a slow start to begin the day, the Raiders bounced back to earn the four set win by scores of 21-25, 25-14, 25-23 and 25-20.

Three Raiders reached double-digits in kills with junior Taylor Dunster (Sutton, Mass.) leading the way with 14 kills to go along with her 10 digs. Freshman Sydney Racevicius (Woodbury, Conn.) hammered down 12 kills and picked up 14 digs as junior Jess Whyte (Plymouth, Mass.) swung at a .667 clip on 11 kills while also totaling 6 blocks. Senior setter Hayley Macken (Clifton Park, N.Y.) dished out 38 assists and scooped up 10 digs on the day and freshman Avery Pollard (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) led the defensive effort with 16 digs and five total blocks.

Gordon was held to just a team hitting percentage of .086 with two student-athletes reaching double-digits in kills. Jamie Tafoya and Mackenzie Hinds led the way with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, and Ashlyn Gergins collected 33 assists. Jenny Curtiss recorded the game-high with 24 digs while Hinds picked up 12 in the loss.

Game Two: Rivier University 3, University of Maine-Presque Isle 0 (Final)

The momentum continued for the Raiders as they rolled to a swift 3-0 win over the University of Maine-Presque Isle by set scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-21.

Graduate Courtney Collins (Litchfield, N.H.) was the team leader with 10 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Sophomores Joy Maswoswe (Ashland, Mass.) and Allison Zagami (Milford, Mass.) chipped in with eight kills apiece to pace the offensive effort. Pollard was the assist leader with 19 and sophomore Katherine Antczak (Salem, N.H.) helped with 18 assists and six digs. Zagami controlled the back line with 14 digs for the Raiders.

The Owls were led by Miranda Washinawatock who had six kills and nine digs. Maddie Thweatt led the team with 13 digs and Laura Aroz handed out 12 helpers in the loss.

Rivier will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night as they host Anna Maria College in a 7pm contest at the Muldoon Gymnasium.
