(Springfield, MA) Behind a strong performance from senior captain Kenna Finlayson (Derry, NH), the Women's Volleyball team began the season with a 2-1 showing at the Springfield College Invitational.
The Raiders swept both Westfield State University and Rhode Isalnd College before dropping the final game, a 3-1 decision to host Springfield.
For her efforts, Finlayson was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Game One: Rivier University 3, Westfield State University 0
In the first game of the season, the Raiders took three straight sets from Westfield State, 25-16, 26-24 and 25-14.
Finlayson paced the offensive attack as she laced 12 kills in 28 attempts. Juniors Nicole Peacock (Warwick, RI) and Nicole Boucher (Windham, NH) each had 5 while freshman Jackie Pisecco (Chelmsford, MA) contributed with 5 kills in her collegiate debut.
On the defensive end, junior Jessica Amaral (East Providence, RI) led the team with 7 digs. Finlayson and freshman Lyndsey Sweeney (Coventry, RI) added 5 each. Freshman Emily O'Reilly (San Francisco, CA) came off the bench to lead the team with 20 assists and 4 digs.
Game Two: Rivier University 3, Rhode Island College 0
The second day of the Invitational began on a good note for the Raiders as they dispatched Rhode Island College in three sets by scores of 26-24, 25-18 and 25-22.
Finlayson, again, was the team leader with 18 kills while Pisecco added 9 as Rivier improved to 2-0 to begin the season. Peacock and Boucher contributed 7 and 4 kills, respectively, as senior Megan Farrell (Marlborough, MA) knocked down 2 kills off the bench.
Amaral led the defensive effort with 11 digs while O'Reilly was the assist leader with 36.
Game three: Springfield College 3, Rivier University 1
With the third and final game of the Invitational, the Raiders took on the host team, Springfield College. After winning the second set to tie things at 1, the Raiders dropped the final two by scores of 25-15 each as they suffered their first loss of 2012.
Finlayson and Peacock led the attack as they combined for 27 kills. Farrell added 5 off the bench and Pisecco chipped in with 6. O'Reilly was stellar in her role as she recorded 39 assists - to go along with 7 digs. Amaral was her usual self on the defensive front as she had 17 kills while freshman Nikki Deluga (Cotuit, MA) added 7 digs in her third game as a Raider.
Next up for the Women's Volleyball team will be a September 8th triple-header at Roger Williams University. They will take on Roger Williams at 10am before squaring off against University of New England (1pm) and NYU Polytechnic (3pm).
