Rivier defeats Anna Maria 77-65

(Paxton, Mass.) The Rivier Women's Basketball team defeated the Anna Maria College Amcats this evening at the Fuller Center by the score of 77-65. With the win, the Raiders improve to 9-11 (5-2 GNAC) on the season. With the loss, the Amcats drops to 9-12 (4-4 GNAC).

The Raiders scored the first basket of the game and never relinquished the lead, despite many AMCAT runs. Anna Maria would stay within six points for the first eight minutes of the game, until Raiders strung together a 6-0 run to take a double-digit lead with nine minutes left in the first half.

Rivier would maintain the double-figure margin for the remainder of the half, until Anna Maria's Lindsay Bond (Webster, Mass.) hit a layup with 20 seconds left to cut the Raiders lead to nine, 35-26, entering halftime.

The AMCATS chipped back in the second half and cut RIvier's lead to just four, 57-53, with 8:35 still to play. It would prove to be the closest Anna Maria would get, however, as the Raiders held Anna Maria to just one point over the next three minutes to build a 10-point lead at 64-54. Anna Maria cut the deficit to six points at the 2:55 mark, but a final 12-6 run sealed the victory for Rivier.

Rivier had good performances turned in by senior Deanna Purcell (Hudson, N.H.) who led the Raiders with 27 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. Rebecca DeBaldo (Pelham, N.H.) and Caitlin Bulger (Quincy, Mass.) each scored 12 points for the Raiders, while Savanna Butterfield (Londonderry, N.H.) added 16 points.

Anna Maria had good performances turned in by senior Trafficia Warburton (Worcester, Mass.) who posted her 13th double-double of the season with 23 points and 18 rebounds.  Sophomore Christina Gauvin (Dudley, Mass.) chipped in with 18 points, while Deja Taitt (Cambia Heights, N.Y.) scored eight points.

In their next contest, the Rivier Women's Basketball team will host the Norwich University Cadets, Saturday, February 14th at 1:00pm in a GNAC matchup. Anna Maria will next play Thursday, February 12th, at 7:00pm against the Fitchburg State Falcons in a non-conference matchup.
