Baseball: Raiders pound out 16 hits in 15-10 win over Newbury

(Northboro, Mass.) The Rivier University Baseball team scored eight runs in the seventh inning to pull away with a 15-10 non-conference victory over Newbury College this evening at the New England Baseball Complex. The Raiders pounded out 16 hits to improve to 2-9 on the season while the Nighthawks fall to 6-10.

Sophomore Eric Maxfield (Lowell, Mass.) went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and senior Tyler Ferdinand (Middleboro, Mass.) knocked in three RBI with a 3-for-5 showing at the dish. Sophomore Brandon Thibault (Methuen, Mass.) also recorded three hits along with totaling four RBI and junior Brett Iannazzo (Methuen, Mass.) plated two runs on his 2-for-5 night.

Freshman Zachery Rodrigues (Achusnet, Mass.) earned the win, his second of the season, as he tossed six innings in relief. The right-hander allowed four runs on three hits and struckout nine.

Newbury's Justin Banks matched Maxfield with a 3-for-3 night at the plate with three RBI and Javier Martinez smashed a three-run home run over the right-centerfield fence in the fourth. Mark Travers was the losing pitcher as he allowed eight runs on five hits in just 2/3 of an inning in relief.

Rivier will have some time off before their next contest which is scheduled for next Tuesday night at Fisher College. Game time is set for 7pm at Fraser Field. Newbury will open up conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Dean College.
