Rivier Baseball drops a pair to Saint Joseph's College

(Nashua, NH) In the final Great Northeast Athletic Conference Baseball double-header of the season, the Rivier University Raiders fell to the Saint Joseph's College Monks, 11-3 and 6-0 this afternoon inside of Historic Holman Stadium. With the losses, the Raiders fall to 8-29 on the season and finish with a 3-13 mark in conference play.

Game One: Saint Joseph's College 11, Rivier University 3 (Final)

Junior Gabe May (Portsmouth, NH) dazzled the Monks through the first two innings before getting fatigued in the third as the Raiders lost game one of the double-header, 11-3.

May tossed four innings allowing nine earned runs and issuing four walks. Most of the damage that was done was after he retired seven straight hitters to begin the game – four of which were strikeouts. Freshman Matt Keefe (Bradford, MA) came out of the pen and was lights out as he allowed two unearned runs over three innings and struck out four Monks.

Freshman Taylor Black (West Springfield, MA) was the lone star as the dish as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Both freshmen Marc Medeiros (Arlington, MA) and Jeremy Ball (Swanzey, NH) each added RBI singles in the sixth to break the shutout bid from SJC pitcher Joe Gruntkosky.

Game Two: Saint Joseph's College 6, Rivier University 0 (Final)

SJC's Nick Whittaker was too much to handle for the Raiders as he tossed six shutout innings en route to a 6-0 win. Sophomore Steve Carlberg (Dover, NH) got the start for Rivier and allowed just two earned runs over 4.2 innings as he suffered his fifth loss of the season.

Freshman Spencer Aguiar (Malden, MA), Keefe and sophomore Lucas Palma (Bristol, CT) proved that the Raider bullpen is the best in the GNAC as they were able to no-hit the Monks over the final 2.1 innings.

Senior Aramis Velez (Lowell, MA) had two of the team's four hits in game two. He finished the game going 2-for-3 and after collecting a hit in game one, is now just two hits away from breaking Adam Bailey's school record for hits in a single-season. Senior John DiBenedetto (Tampa, FL) ended his GNAC career with a 1-for-2 performance while freshman Nicholas Gagnon (Providence, RI) recorded the fourth hit for Rivier.

Rivier will finish the 2013 season with a pair of home games against Bates College (Tuesday night) and Eastern Nazarene College (Thursday night). Both contests are scheduled to start at 7:05pm inside of Historic Holman Stadium.
