(Waltham, MA) The Rivier University baseball team traveled to Waltham, Massachusetts to face conference foes Lasell College. The Raiders' offense struggled as they dropped both conference games by scores of 4-0 and 5-0. Rivier's overall record fell to 5-21 and their conference record dropped to 1-7. The Lasers improved their overall record to 9-14 and an even 5-5 in conference play.
Game One: Lasell College 4, Rivier University 0
The Lasers took game one behind a complete game two hit performance by starter Jake Malone. The Raiders spoiled a strong pitching performance by freshman starter Nick Pica (Hampstead, NH). Pica pitched six strong innings and kept the Raiders in the game while striking out three and allowing only one earned run. Freshman right fielder Jeremy Ball (Swanzey, NH) had the only two Raider hits in game one and was the only Raider to steal a base in the contest.
Bobby Statchura led the Lasell offense with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate and drove in two of the teams four runs in the bottom of the fifth. The other Lasell runs came off of a sac fly in the second by Bobby Ellard and an RBI single by Billy Uberti in the sixth.
Game Two: Lasell College 5, Rivier University 0 (5 Innings)
In a rain shortened game two, Lasell notched the victory behind a strong pitching performance by Eric Howard. Howard pitched five complete innings while striking out five and holding the Raiders without a run. He was supported by his offense which included two hits by both Ellard and Uberti who combined for three RBIs and a run.
The Raiders had junior Gabe May (Portsmouth, NH) on the mound in game two and he took the loss despite striking out six and allowing just seven hits. Once again the Rivier offense struggled to support their starter and was only able to muster three hits. Those hits came off the bats of senior tri-captain John DiBenedetto (Tampa, FL) and sophomores Bryar King (Berlin, NH) and Mike Scanlon (Plantsville, CT). The Raiders were unable to capitalize with runners at first and third in the top of the second inning.
Due to a steady rainfall throughout the contest after the bottom of the fifth, the umpires called the game and gave Lasell the 5-0 victory.
