Upset-minded Raiders drop a pair of games to Suffolk

(Nashua, NH) The Rivier University Baseball team nearly pulled off an upset for the ages as they took visiting Suffolk University into extra innings before finally falling 7-6 in the first game of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference double-header inside Historic Holman Stadium this afternoon. The Rams then proceeded to launch four homers in a 14-0 game two win.
Suffolk improves to 19-3 overall and remains 8-0 in the GNAC while Rivier falls to 5-17 overall, 1-5 in GNAC play.
Game One: Suffolk University 7, Rivier University 6 (Final – 8 innings)
Senior Aramis Velez (Lowell, MA) launch a game tying grand slam in the third and a go ahead two run shot in the fifth but the Raiders were unable to hold on for the win in the opening game of the twinbill.
As the Raiders entered the top of the sixth with a two run lead, freshman Eddie Soucie (South Ryegate, VT) appeared to have the first batter he faced retired on strikes but a questionable call behind home plate allowed the Rams to have life. With the bases loaded, sophomore Steven Carlberg (Dover, NH) was summoned from the bullpen and the lefty was able to only allow one run to cross and Rivier still had a 6-5 lead after 6.5 innings of play.
A leadoff double that was just out of the reach of freshman centerfielder Marc Medeiros (Arlington, MA) put the tying run in scoring position for Suffolk. The following hitter then popped up a bunt that was corralled by Carlberg, Suffolk's catcher JC Collette then laced an RBI single to tie the game. Rivier was able to work out of a bases loaded jam and keep the game knotted a t 6.
In the top half of the eighth, Suffolk's Mac Jacobson doubled to right and was able to score on Mike Cunningham's sacrifice fly.
The Raiders were retired in order as Suffolk's Josh Desai got the complete game win.
Game Two: Suffolk University 14, Rivier University 0 (Final)
The second game of the double-header was all Suffolk as they homered four times en route to a 14-0 win.
Mike Cunningham, Chris Stanley, JC Collette and Jack Sullivan all hit the long ball in game two while Stanley was able to hit a grand slam.
Freshman David Feole (Scituate, RI) was the only Raider to record a hit in the game.
Rivier will be back inside Historic Holman Stadium on Tuesday evening as they will battle cross town foe Daniel Webster College in the annual Gate City Double-Header. Game one begins at 5:05 PM.
