Women's Volleyball: Rivier begins 2019 season in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – The Rivier University Women's Volleyball team opened up their 2019 season this afternoon with a four set loss to Washington College down on the island of Puerto Rico. It was the first game of the season for both programs as the Raiders are now 0-1 and the Shorewoman are 1-0.

The Raiders were paced by sophomore Sydney Racevicius (Woodbury, Conn.) who recorded the team-high of eight kills and senior Jess Whyte (Plymouth, Mass.) added seven winners while swinging at a .364 clip. Classmate Taylor Dunster (Sutton, Mass.) finished with six kills and a block solo on the afternoon. Sophomore setter Avery Pollard (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) dished out 28 assists and freshman libero Olivia Garand (Litchfield, N.H.) scooped up 22 digs in her collegiate debut.

Washington College was guided by junior outside hitter Abby Smith (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and senior Cassie Kowalski (Wilmington, Del.), who had 14 and 10 kills respectively. Sophomore setter Lauren Zedlar (Burbank, Calif.) registered 23 assists and junior Abby Hilty (Annandale, N.J.) led the backline effort with 10 digs. 6-2 sophomore Jenna Daunoras (Shamong, N.J.) was stellar along the net for the Shorewoman as she record six block solos in the win.

Both these two teams will matchup again tomorrow morning in beautiful San Juan with a game time set for 11am.
