Women's Volleyball: Zargaj named GNAC Rookie of the Week

(Winthrop, Mass.) It was announced this afternoon by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference that Rivier University freshman, Julia Zargaj (Groveland, Mass.) has been selected as the Conference's Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week presented by Corvias.

Zargaj kicked off her collegiate career by averaging 3.09 kills per set on a .433 hitting percentage in a 2-2 week for the Raiders while also obtaining a 0.91 blocks per set average. The first-year middle hitter played in eleven sets and highlighted her week with a 15-kill, five block performance in the team's 3-1 win over Skidmore College at the Springfield Invitational.

Also being recognized by the GNAC is junior setter Hayley Macken (Clifton Park, N.Y.)as she was selected as an Honorable Mention. Macken helped guide the Raiders to a second place finish at the Springfield Invitational and was named to the All-Invitational team for her efforts. She was a force in all areas registering 8.92 assists per set and a .359 hitting percentage on offense while scooping up 2.67 digs per set.

The Raiders Women's Volleyball team will return to action this weekend as they prepare for the 2017 installment of the Granite State Challenge. On Friday night, they will take on both Keene State College and New England College up at Plymouth State before traveling to Keene for matches with the Panthers and Colby-Sawyer College. Rivier will host Newbury College next Tuesday night for their first home contest of the season.
