Women's Soccer: Wescott's late goal not enough as the comeback falls short to Colby-Sawyer

(Nashua, N.H.) The Rivier University Women's Soccer suffered a 3-2 setback this evening to visiting Colby-Sawyer College under the light at Raider Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action. The loss moves the Raiders overall record to 3-8-0 and 2-7-0 against the conference while the Chargers up their record to 5-6-0 overall, 5-4-0 in the GNAC.

Colby-Sawyer scored the game's first goal in the 22nd minute when junior Leah Dupuis (Concord, N.H.) recorded her first of the season. Almost 10 minutes later in the 31st minute, the Chargers added to their lead as senior Hannah Fields (Shapleigh, Maine) knocked home a pass from classmate Shari Rainville (Highgate Center, Vt.) to make it a 2-0 game. It was Field's team leading sixth goal of the season.

Colby-Sawyer then made it a 3-0 contest in the second stanza as senior Abbie Sansoucy (Douglas, Mass.) banged home her 4th goal of the year.

Rivier would break the shutout in the 69th minute as sophomore Ashley Glynn (Salem, N.H.) converted on a penalty kick for her first goal of the season. A late offensive push led to sophomore Madison Wescott (Tewksbury, Mass.) notching her third goal of the season in the 88th minute off a free kick by senior Megan Hamel (Colebrook, N.H.) to cut the deficit to one. However that would be all the Raiders could get as they ultimately fell by a 3-2 final.

Junior Kasey Smith (Hopkinton, N.H.) was magnificent in net for the Raiders as she made seven saves. Colby-Sawyer senior keeper Oona Bond (Southborough, Mass.) stopped two of four shots she faced for the win.

Rivier will return to action this Saturday afternoon as they travel to Albertus Magnus College for a 1pm GNAC kickoff. Colby-Sawyer will also be in conference action on Saturday as they get set to host the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) beginning at 12:30pm.
